What to 'actually' write in a newsletter ?

Types of Newsletters

This week we are talking about different types of newsletters that you could be starting. And a deeper dive into how each of the newsletters is operated and what might be the best for YOU!

We are going to talk about

  • Types of newsletters

  • Newsletter Spotlight

  • Top Weekly picks

All the newsletters which are normally written can be classified based on the TYPE OF CONTENT written in it.

1. News Based

That’s simple to understand, the newsletter that brings news. Most of these newsletters are Daily, for the obvious reason, we need daily updates.

With these types of newsletters, you don’t need to find new news, but make the existing ones more interesting. Like Milk Road does with Crypto news, they make the news fun to read.

You just need to BRING them to your readers, in a creative way.

Newsletters like Morning Brew, Milk Road, and The Hustle, curate the news and they are not the ones who are actually COLLECTING it, but they are CURATING it from the best sources.

So, if you want to start a company which is based on News, you need to,

  1. Be able to send out a daily newsletter

  2. Be able to find the right sources from which to collect these news.

  3. And add some creativity to stand out.

2. Advice-Based

When you have certain experience in any field you can share with the world, this type of newsletter works the best.

It is usually run by Coaches and Consultants or people having courses. The base-level knowledge can be shared for free in the newsletter and this can act as the bottom of the funnel to fuel the revenue growth.

It is like there is an A-Z journey, you can take your audience from A to B or to C in your newsletter and deeper knowledge can be gained through products.

When someone talks with experience, people listen to them. Many people are doing these newsletters like Justin Welsh, Dan Koe, and Dina’s Newsletter from Authority Marketing.

  1. Research-Based

Research-based newsletters are not just personal advice. It is based on deep research from authority-based content. It is like, curating the content and making a Sense out of it.

Growth in reverse has reached thirty thousand plus subscribers in six months through organic channels (mixed with cross-collaboration) and without any paid ads.

People who already are making money, have figured out the basics, they don't want to listen to the basics anymore, they want something more, that goes beyond the surface.

Like Growth in Reverse, many of these types of newsletters are weekly because crisp content with deep research takes time and effort.

Marketing Examples, and Chartr Data Story are also Research-Based newsletters.

  1. Personality-Based

These newsletters are written when you have people who care about what you have to say. It is usually when you have a huge social presence or atleast people know about you.

Curiosity Chronicles by Sahil Bloom and James Clear’s Newsletter are two of such type of newsletters.

Now, the CHOICE, which one should you go with? The answer is the one YOU CAN SUSTAIN.

Growing a newsletter takes time like every other thing. So, what can you keep doing before seeing any substantial results?

Can you sustain doing news? Every single day?

Can you sustain advising what you have learned in your journey?

Or can you sustain highly research-based content which is taking time and I'm saving people's time?

If you’re in the b2b category just starting out in the early phase looking to start a newsletter. A mix of research and advice will be a good fit for you.
